What is Jawline Botox?
Jaw (masseter) botox places a small dose of toxin into the masseter — the muscle used to chew — so an over-developed muscle gradually slims and the jawline looks softer from the front. The injection takes about 10 minutes with little disruption to daily life. Much like a bicep that shrinks when you stop working it out, easing the daily workload of the jaw muscle lets an over-developed masseter settle over a few weeks.
Who it may be considered for
Jaw Botox may be considered in the following situations.
- The masseter muscles on both sides of the jaw stand out when clenching and the lower face looks square
- The aim is to soften the facial line where the masseter is well developed
- The masseter has become overdeveloped through habits such as teeth grinding or clenching
- The aim is to refine the lower facial line gradually without incisions
- A treatment with little downtime and little impact on daily life is preferred
However, when the main reason the face looks square is the shape of the bone structure itself, or skin sagging or fat rather than a well-developed masseter, the change that can be expected may be limited. The medical team judges suitability individually after assessing the size and movement of the masseter when clenching, along with the facial shape.
What happens at the visit
1. Assessment: with the patient clenching their teeth, the doctor checks the masseter by feel (palpation) to confirm its thickness, left-right symmetry, and the thickest point, then plans the appropriate dose and injection points based on the cause of the muscle development.
2. Mapping: injection points are planned about 1.5-2 cm above the angle of the jaw, distributed across the thickest area on each side, positioned to avoid affecting the smile or cheek (reducing the chance of a temporary cheek bulge when smiling).
3. Cleansing & injection: after wiping the skin with alcohol, a measured dose is delivered into the muscle (intramuscularly) with a fine needle. The sensation is typically a brief pinprick, and Jaw Botox is usually performed without separate anesthesia.
4. Finish: patients receive aftercare guidance; washing the face and applying makeup are generally fine after 2-3 hours. Total time about 10 minutes.
Safety and aftercare
Treatment may be restricted during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in the case of neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or when there is active infection in the treatment area. If you have experienced an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction to botulinum toxin or its components, or are taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, or other medication that can affect bleeding, please inform the medical team before treatment. Please also be sure to inform us if you are using medication that can affect neuromuscular transmission, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Immediately after treatment, redness, swelling, stinging, or bruising may appear at the injection sites, and in most cases these gradually settle over time. As movement of the masseter muscle decreases, chewing strength may temporarily weaken or the jaw may tire easily. During the period of discomfort, reducing tough or hard foods may help.
Rarely, after treatment part of the masseter may look relatively prominent or bulge when the muscle is tensed. This usually improves with observation over time, but if it persists or is noticeable, the medical team assesses the condition and determines whether additional correction is needed.

Frequently asked questions
When Will Jaw Botox Results Appear — and How Long Do They Last?
Botulinum toxin begins acting around 2-3 days after injection, becomes clearly noticeable at about 2 weeks, and for the masseter the change typically settles over roughly 2-4 weeks as the muscle is used less. The visible softening of the jawline appears gradually rather than instantly. Duration varies with individual muscle mass and habits but is generally around 4-6 months; to keep the shape stable, a repeat treatment is commonly planned roughly every 3-6 months. Results and longevity differ between individuals and are not permanent — muscle function returns as the nerve signaling recovers.
Does Jaw Botox hurt? Do I need anesthesia?
The dose is injected into the muscle with a fine needle, and the sensation is usually a brief pinprick. It is typically done without separate anesthesia; for those who are sensitive to pain, please discuss it with the doctor in advance.
When will I see results and how long do they last?
Effects usually begin in 2-3 days, become clear around 2 weeks, and settle over about 2-4 weeks. Duration varies by individual but is generally around 4-6 months, and is not permanent.
Is one session enough?
Patients may notice a change after one session, but to keep a stable shape a repeat treatment roughly every 3-6 months is generally recommended. The doctor decides the appropriate number based on the masseter thickness.
How is the dose decided?
Masseter thickness, degree of development, and left-right symmetry differ from person to person, so there is no single fixed standard dose applied uniformly. The doctor palpates the masseter directly and then plans the appropriate dose and injection points; because products differ in unit potency, the suitable dose can also vary with the product chosen.
